Stories from our community

Every person who comes through our doors brings their own experiences, interests and aspirations. Through creativity, shared activities and a welcoming community, people often discover new opportunities, build meaningful relationships and find ways to contribute their skills and talents.

These stories offer a glimpse into the many different journeys people take at The Power House. While everyone's experience is unique, they share something in common: the opportunity to connect, create and grow as part of a supportive community.

New beginnings through creativity

When Val joined The Power House, she was rebuilding her life after a difficult period of change. What began with attending Creative Wellbeing sessions soon grew into regular involvement across a range of activities, including the Warm Hub, Upcycling Café and Cornerstone Patch .

Through taking part, Val developed friendships, became an active member of the community and found opportunities to both receive and offer support to others. She describes The Power House as “a lifeline”, helping her feel more connected and confident while creating a sense of safety and belonging.

Alongside these connections, Val has continued to develop new skills and opportunities. She has completed a horticulture course, begun training as a nail technician and secured part-time work facilitating creative sessions for other women. Today, she is exploring ways to give back through volunteering and leading future activities.

A place to belong

Diane first became involved with The Power House through Thrive sessions and later returned through the Warm Hub. After losing a previous volunteering role, she found a welcoming space where she could reconnect with others and continue contributing to her community. With support from the team and local partners, she was able to take on a new volunteering opportunity.

Living with ongoing health challenges, Diane values the flexibility and understanding offered by The Power House. Being able to join activities at her own pace has helped remove barriers to participation and allowed her to stay connected, even during more difficult periods.

For Diane, some of the most important moments are often the simplest: sharing a meal, enjoying a conversation or spending time with people who understand and welcome her. These everyday connections have helped her build friendships, feel part of the community and maintain a strong sense of belonging.

Whether you're looking to learn something new, share your skills, meet other people or simply enjoy spending time in a welcoming community space, there's a place for you here.
