Why I said yes: Becoming a Trustee of The Power House
Blog by Bridget, Trustee and Volunteer at The Power House
At my stage of life, and now I work part-time, I believe that giving back is essential, rather than optional.
I’ve been shaped by my life experiences and feel I have something to offer to support those in my community. I became disabled two and a half years ago which means I’ve learned the hard way that people need to show up for each other. I’ve been very lucky in that sense.
Now I’d like to show up for others in my community.
I was particularly drawn to The Power House, as it offers both a welcoming space where people can gather, create and feel welcome; and the community garden where something real grows, tended by real hands.
You can walk into the hub, not knowing anyone, and you will quickly feel like you belong. Getting involved with the creative arts activities gives you a way to express yourself, and feel like you’ve achieved something, surrounded by likeminded and supportive people. Working in the garden, watching vegetables and flowers grow, and being able to eat what you’ve grown feels amazing.
Both the hub and garden provide a heart to the community of Hamworthy. The activities give people a chance to be creative, learn new skills, and meet and connect with other people.
I’m so pleased to have the chance to be part of this great organisation and help to support and shape it now and in future.
If you'd like to find out more about becoming a Trustee and helping shape the future of The Power House, or volunteer at the hub or garden, we'd love to hear from you.
